bangkok has only been the capital of thailand for about 250 years. until the 18th century ayutthaya was the centre of the kingdom of siam and also the most important metropolis of southeast asia. in 1767 ayutthaya was taken by the burmese, plundered and largely destroyed.
the city never recovered from this. shortly after, after a period of more than 400 years as a royal city, the seat of government was moved to bangkok. ruins remained, which can still be visited today.
today ayutthaya is a historical site but also a place of several still active important temples that visited by many thai people to worship buddha.
